AI Related Movies finds similar titles for every movie and series on your site the way a film buff would: by mood, theme, director and audience, not by matching words. The result goes into a new “Similar movies” poster block and into the standard DLE “Related news” block. Visitors keep watching, pages get linked to each other, behavioral metrics go up. Supports DLE 15.1–21.0.

Highlights

  • Only movies from your site. The module first selects candidates from your catalog, then the AI picks the best ones — no invented titles and no links to nowhere.
  • Identifies each movie precisely. By IMDb, Kinopoisk, TMDB, original title and year — “Dune” from 1984 and from 2021 will not get mixed up.
  • Three modes. Smart (AI + site data), “AI names movies” and “No AI” — free, based on genres, directors, actors and TMDB and Kinopoisk viewer recommendations.
  • A poster block that fits any template. Carousel, grid or list, rating and year on the poster, “why it’s similar” under the title, accent color and dark theme — all set in the admin panel.
  • “Missing on site”. Movies recommended most often that your site does not have — a ready plan of what to add. Once a movie appears, the module adds it to similar lists by itself.
  • Runs on its own and stays affordable. New posts are processed in the background, one match costs about 1,500 tokens (10,000 movies — $2–8), with daily and monthly spending limits.

How it works

The module keeps its own movie catalog: local and original title, year, type (movie, series, anime, cartoon), database IDs, genres, countries, directors, actors, rating and poster. You choose which additional fields hold what from a list — nothing has to be typed in by hand. New and edited posts get into the catalog automatically.

For each movie the module gathers candidates: shared genres, the same director, shared actors, the same franchise, TMDB viewer recommendations and Kinopoisk similar movies, semantic closeness of descriptions. The signals are combined with a proven, widely used formula, then the top 40 candidates go to the AI, which picks the best matches with a short explanation. The final list is balanced for variety: one franchise will not take over the whole block.

Features

Matching

  • “Smart” mode: candidates come only from the site, the AI ranks and explains them — more accurate and cheaper than asking it to name movies.
  • “AI names movies” mode: the AI suggests titles, the module finds them on your site by ID, title and year; misses go to “Missing on site”.
  • “No AI” mode: genres, directors, actors, franchises, TMDB and Kinopoisk — free and without AI keys.
  • TMDB viewer recommendations by TMDB ID or IMDb ID and Kinopoisk similar movies by Kinopoisk ID.
  • Semantic similarity (embeddings): movies with a similar plot even when the genres differ. 10,000 movies cost about $0.06.
  • A series gets series recommended first, an anime gets anime; no more than two movies from one franchise.
  • Excluded categories, “never suggest”, a blacklist and “Separate worlds” — for example, 18+ and kids’ movies never mix.
  • New arrivals join the similar lists of older movies on their own — no new AI requests.

AI providers

  • DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, xAI Grok, OpenRouter, Perplexity, YandexGPT and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  • An up-to-date model list with the “Refresh list” button, a connection test, model prices right in the list.
  • Works with new models (GPT-5 and newer, Claude 5, Gemini 3): the module adjusts request parameters by itself.
  • Fallback providers, HTTP and SOCKS5 proxies for servers in Russia, answer cache, spending limits in dollars.

Block on the site

  • The {ai-related} tag and [ai-related] / [not-ai-related] wrappers for fullstory.tpl.
  • A poster carousel with arrows and swipe scrolling, a grid or a compact list.
  • Poster, rating, year, a “Series” / “Anime” / “Cartoon” label and the “why it’s similar” reason.
  • Accent color, corner radius, light, dark or auto theme — including the Air template switcher in DLE 21.
  • Your own look — copy block.tpl and item.tpl into the template folder. Lightweight styles, lazy image loading, keyboard accessibility.
  • The standard DLE “Related news” block also receives the matched movies — works without editing the template.
  • Cookie-free impression and click statistics; “seen but not clicked” shows where to improve the matches.

Management

  • A dashboard with catalog coverage, queue, errors, costs and block CTR.
  • Movie card: pin in place, remove and never suggest, move up / down, add manually, freeze, restore previous DLE similar posts, block preview.
  • Bulk matching with progress, background processing on visits or via CRON, event log.
  • Interface in Russian, English, Ukrainian and Spanish.
